<image:caption>Freedom and Security in a World with No Off Switch 2020 Yale University Press The Internet has leapt from human-facing display screens into the material objects all around us. Laura DeNardis argues that this diffusion of the Internet into the physical world radically escalates governance concerns around privacy, discrimination, human safety, democracy, and national security, and she offers new cyber-policy solutions. In her discussion, she makes visible the sinews of power already embedded in our technology and explores how hidden technical governance arrangements will become the constitution of our future.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2014 Yale University Press The Global War for Internet Governance has become the definitive source for understanding the inner power structure already in place within the architectures and institutions of Internet governance. It has been translated into Japanese and Chinese and reviewed favorable in Science Magazine, The History of Science Society journal Isis, Kirkus Reviews, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, and Technology and Culture. Jonathan Zittrain has said “The Global War for Internet Governance is an invaluable resource for anyone wishing to understand the political intricacies behind Internet protocols and the diverse group of power players vying to influence them.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Global Politics of Interoperability MIT Press 2011 Openness is not a given on the Internet. Technical standards—the underlying architecture that enables interoperability among hardware and software from different manufacturers—increasingly control individual freedom and the pace of innovation in technology markets. Heated battles rage over the very definition of “openness” and what constitutes an open standard in information and communication technologies. In Opening Standards, experts from industry, academia, and public policy explore what is at stake in these controversies, considering both economic and political implications of open standards, and recommending a framework for defining openness in twenty-first-century information infrastructures.</image:caption>

<image:title>Books - The Turn to Infrastructure in Internet Governance</image:title>
<image:caption>2016 Palgrave This edited volume brings together global experts to analyze infrastructure's role in Internet governance, both now and in the future. Never in history have conflicts over Internet governance attracted such widespread attention. Much of the Internet governance ecosystem—both technical architecture and coordinating institutions—is behind the scenes but increasingly carries significant public interest implications. An area once concealed in institutional and technological complexity is now rightly bracketed among other shared global issues—such as environmental protection and human rights—that have considerable global implications but are simply incongruous with national borders. This transformation into an era of global governance by Internet infrastructure presents a moment of opportunity for scholars to bring these politicized infrastructures to the foreground.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2016, Slate Magazine listed Dr. DeNardis as one of the seven most influential “key people” in Internet governance, along with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Chinese President Xi Jinping. For more than two decades, she has been viewed as a global authority and thought leader in digital architecture and governance, through intellectual contributions and executive leadership in the field and as an expert advisor to industry, foundations, and government. She has done security clearance work for the U.S. Department of Defense and has been engaged in large projects for the United Nations International Telecommunication Union, the National Academies of Science, and a host of companies including IBM, AT&T, Fidelity, NASD, Siemens, Prudential, and Dreyfus, among others. She served as a State Department advisor and also the Research Director of the Global Commission on Internet Governance from 2014-2016.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. DeNardis is the inaugural Director of the Center for Digital Ethics at Georgetown. The Center for Digital Ethics is a dynamic, university-wide community of scholars addressing the pressing ethical implications of emerging technologies as they reshape policy, scholarship, and human experience. Our goal is to help the world cope with technological challenges and opportunities, from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity, that are outstripping social, legal, and ethical guidelines.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Internet in Everything - Reviews</image:title>
<image:caption>“Essential reading for policymakers and ordinary citizens alike.” —Publishers Weekly "This brilliant and essential book does nothing less than alter our paradigm for thinking about the internet—from communications and indirect control to communications and direct control. The internet is even more powerful—or more dangerous—than we think."—Anupam Chander, author of The Electronic Silk Road: How the Web Binds the World Together in Commerce “This is a must-read.” —Vint Cerf, Internet Pioneer "The Internet isn't just about communication anymore, Laura DeNardis explains in this important new book. Digital networks can now directly affect and manipulate our physical world--even our own bodies. And when the Internet is embedded in everything, everything becomes a potential object of surveillance and control. DeNardis shows us why we need a new politics of privacy and security as the Internet gets physical." -Jack Balkin, Yale Law School</image:caption>
